1) Frozen Pens
After we hiked to check on the WGT letterbox this past Sunday , dummy
me forgot to bring along an extra pen to replace the one that was just
way too cold to work........
P.S. The last entry was on 10/04/2004...........a note in the log read:
Hard to find letterbox......... (NY LBer's...not mentioning any names)

Oooh, that's why I got a Fisher Space Pen...writes in
freezing temperatures, underwater, upside-down, in
zero gravity (you know, for when someone plants a
letterbox on an asteroid...).

That's why I put two pencils in my "I Love Winter" letterboxes I planted last
year and this year too. The boxes were just find last year even with the
snow. I haven't checked the ones I planted this December 20th yet. Time will
tell.

Bluebird taught me to stick my pen inside my glove. My body warmth
keeps the pen from freezing, and I won't lose the pen (unless I'm too
careless when taking off my gloves that is!).

2) Cracked Boxes
Well this has happened to one of the LB's placed on top of Wittenberg
Mountain. It had been so cold* that the plastic box must have opened
under the stresses of the weather/snow/ice to allow the contents to be
soaked when checked out this past Spring. ..........
* or maybe it was OP (LB) error....not closing the box when
found...........
Mall boxes sound good to me........inside out of the weather....hmmm....
BTW how many days till Spring????

This seems so strange to us in Texas. I'd have to say we actually
PREFER winter letterboxing since it gets so hot in the summer that we
practically MELT!!! And don't get me started on what can happen to
boxes in extreme heat....
I guess the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence!

Seems the general conclusion one can make is that letterboxing is
easiest during only half the year. Which half, of course, depends on
where you live.
And there are places like San Diego ...

I love San Diego! been there 3 times.... Pre -'letterboxing". Can't
wait to go back and do some more 'exploring! However, there is still
plenty I need to 'explore', even in the winter months on the East Coast
(when the white stuff isn't too deep)

i've lived in new hampshire for 15 years now and i know how the
winters are here, so when i started LBing this summer, i didn't know
what i was going to do this winter. i planned on waiting until the
snow melted, but there has been little snow to worry about. so i've
continued boxing. someday the snow will come and it will finally keep
me inside. until then, watch out new england. here i come.

Well Dave, it's funny you mention it. I hadn't even considered it 'cause I thought it was like an 8 hour drive or something. I just checked Mapquest and it's only 4. Hell, I just drove that far to attend Gallant Rogue's 50th Birthday Bash. So I might re-think this event and head on up after all. I'll get back to you. and Mini, I wouldn't think of heading to NH without letting you know.
